Vice Chancellor of Mountain Top University, Ogun State, , has called on Nigerian governments at the national and sub-national levels to support graduates with start-up funds to encourage entrepreneurship in the country.
The professor of Applied Geophysics made this call at a career summit recently organised for the pioneer students of MTU at the institution’s multipurpose hall.
At the summit, which had in attendance seasoned professionals and key industry players, Ayolabi advised the students to pursue excellence at all times and to be good ambassadors of the university as they go into labour market.
While addressing newsmen shortly after the event, the don advised the Nigerian government to emulate its Israeli counterpart, which provided school-leavers and young adults with interest-free loans to stimulate their entrepreneurial spirit.
Noting that every year universities churn out so many graduates, many of them with no job options, he called on government to promote entrepreneurship as a viable means of solving the unemployment problem in the country.
“The government at the various levels in Nigeria must rise to the occasion and provide graduates with funds to help them start a business. The funds may come by way of interest-free loans with a flexible repayment plan. If they fail in the business, they would have learnt something new.
“They must be encouraged to start over and do more. The times have changed; there are few jobs available today. It is the responsibility of government to help graduates become employers of labour,” Ayolabi said.
Commissioned on December 21, 2015, MTU is set to graduate its pioneer students on December 20, 2019.
